As part of the Gaelforce West Adventure Race weekend on Saturday 22nd & 23rd August the Mayo Sports Partnership is proposing to co-ordinate a Festival of Sport to take place on the South Mall / Fairgreen of Westport on Sunday 23rd August Time : 2pm – 5pm. The event will consist of adventure sport activities utilising the mall river, sports challenges involving all local sports clubs / organisations who agree to participate, activities for people with a disability, the annual fun Mayo Team Challenge for teams of 6 over 18 years of age and other workshops / activities including Nordic Walking / Bowling / traditional games which may appeal to older people.
The event will be family orientated but will appeal to all age groups. The aim of the initiative is to develop a community link with the Gaelforce West Adventure races, promote Westport as an ‘Active’ town and to increase awareness amongst the general public of the importance of sport / physical activity as a medium in the promotion of health / wellbeing.
Speaking about the initiative Mayo Sports Partnership Co-ordinator and Westport native Charlie Lambert stated
“ With the absence of a festival last year as part of the Gaelforce events we felt that there was a gap to be filled. This event will be smaller in nature than the previous festivals, community focused and will portray Westport as an Active town. In order for the event to be a success we would encourage all community organisations / groups who have sport / physical activity as their central focus to support the initiative”
The Sports Partnership would like to invite all clubs / organisations in the Westport area to be part of this local event by showcasing your clubs activities and maybe putting together an activity challenge. This activity challenge would be included on a list of activities which would have to be completed by participants when they sign on. The challenges would need to suitable for children and young adults. Examples of such may be a penalty shoot out in soccer, agility challenge in athletics, solo challenge in gaelic / hurling etc etc. If you feel you would not be able to put together a challenge but would like to promote your clubs activities you can just register with us for an information point on the day.
To find out more about the event we would like to invite representatives from all Westports Sports Organisations to a short meeting on Thursday 11th June at 8.30pm in the Westport Chamber of Commerce Office, The Fairgreen, Westport (Beside Tobys). In order for this local event to be a success we need your input and co-operation to the structure / make up of the day.
