Sea2Summit entries almost full

Entries closing for Sea 2 Summit Adventure race.

After the success of Gaelforce in Westport over the past 5 years now the Clewbay town has an adventure race all of its own that starts and finishes in the town, interest from around the country in S2S has been overwhelming with places for both races filling up faster than expected. Entries close once we reach 600 participants and at the moment we are over 500. Saturday November the 13th promises to be an unforgettable day as many locals battle it out against themselves and the Elite from around the country to bring home the spoils.

Westport is making itself the real adventure capital of Ireland as many people from around the country now travel from near and far to train as it has all the ingredients for the best training sessions for adventure racing, weather is no obstacle regardless if its hail rain or snow every day people are seen cycling out the Greenway on route to Croagh Patrick.

With 600 contestants along with partners and friends expected to descend upon Westport throughout the weekend. The Westport Plaza & Castlecourt Hotel Resort is the hub and HQ of the Westport Sea 2 Summit. On the Friday evening in the Castlecourt Hotel, Padraig Marrey will give a free motivational talk at 9pm to all race participants which should create a great buzz before the race. The race begins at the Resort and the prize giving and after party is hosted in the Resort. Competitors can share their experience of the race and celebrate with their partners after completing the challenging S2S.

The inaugural Westport Sea2Summit Adventure Race is designed to suit all levels of fitness and interests with a mix of road running, cycling and a mountain hike including the challenging terrain of Croagh Patrick at 764 m (2507 ft) with fantastic views of Clew Bay as a backdrop. It will finish with a short sea run at Roman island and small obstacle challenge at the Quay pond before finishing at the Fairgreen. This challenge offers participants a choice of two routes; the Supreme Event which offers all of the intensity of the ultimate Adventure Race or the Spirit Event which will certainly appeal to those of relative fitness yet wanting to challenge themselves and push their personal fitness levels. The S2S Supreme Relay Event will take place over the same route and at the same time as the Solo S2S Supreme race. Teams will be of three people and they will share the disciplines.

The race will start at 9am at the Castlecourt hotel on Castlebar street and with all 600 contestants charging up Distillery road this will be a sight to behold, the Spirit athletes are expected home first and should be crossing the finish line at the Fairgreen on Mill street at around 11am the first of the Elite to finish the Supreme course should be in at approx 12noon.

An unforgettable experience is guaranteed for each & every contestant! For all those interested in participating or for additional information log onto www.westportsea2summit.ie, call 098-55088 or follow us on Facebook

S2S Event Information

The S2S Supreme course
The event begins at the Westport Plaza & Castlecourt Hotel Resort at 9am

Stage 1 Participants will run up Distillery Road on to the new Greenway and follow the Greenway to Westport Quay and on to Roman island (4.5km)

Stage 2 The 1st Transition Point is at Roman Island there you change on to your bike and follow the road out via the coast to Murrisk (8k) to Croagh Patrick car park. ( Transition 2)

Stage 3 Changing shoes again to climb Croagh Patrick (5k) which is widely known and we are using the most used side for the race. At the top we urge that you take care on the descent as the loose shale is dangerous and numerous accidents have occurred there in the past.

Stage 4 Returning to Croagh Patrick Car Park to pick up your bike and take on the rolling hills. Taking the main road to Louisburgh turning left after Lecanvey for Drummin where the back breaking steep climb of the Maum awaits you; recommended gearing on your bike is 39x27 its 25% in places, through Drummin village and on to Liscarney where it’s all downhill back to Roman Island transition point.

Stage 5 The last section could be the hardest, with a 4 km run to include a short sea run and obstacle challenge, returning to Westport Town via the Greenway, finishing at the Fairgreen overlooking the Mall River.

The S2S Spirit Route
The S2S Spirit Route is similar with the same first run and bike but the hike up Croagh Patrick only goes as far as the ridge (3k) and then descends to the car park leaving out the torches Cone. The Maum Hill Cycle is also reduced to 8km.

The S2S Supreme Relay Event will take place over the same route and at the same time as the Solo S2S Supreme race. Teams will be of three people and they will share the disciplines in whatever they wish.
