A team from Ireland will under take the gruelling RAAM (The Race Across AMerica) in June 2008. the riders are non competitive cyclist form Meath, Louth and Dublin area.
To date there have been 3 testing training camps held over 3 weekends.
The venture started back in December 2007 when willing participants sent their names forward after replying to a newspaper article on the RAAM.
The idea was dreamed up by Alan Heary who is a personal trainer in Navan, the dream became reality when the Bubble gum club camp on board as event Charity.
40 people applied to be on the team but the willing participants had to be whittled down to 13 by completing a serious of tests and interviews. 2 camps later and the squad is down to 8 riders.
By the end of May the team has to be named where only the 4 strongest will be selected to partake in the Worlds toughest sporting event the RAAM, 3150 miles of cycling, 110,000 feet of climbing through all extremes from scorching heat of the dessert to the high winds of Kansas and all this to be done on the bear minimum of sleep (at most 7-10hrs) for the expected finishing time of 7 and half days.
