In a marathon 7 hr race from Gibbstown (Gaelthacht village outside Navan Co Meath) to Maire Lukes in the (Gaelthacht ) in Tourmakeady Co Mayo, the unique cross-country challenge pitting pedal power against motor power took place last weekend when six cyclists took on six
motorcyclists in a race across the country.
The cyclists had a time of 6hrs 52minutes as a time to beat the Bikers(Motorcyclists) had to complete the journey in 3hrs 26mnutes while obeying all the rules of the road.
The motor bikers were organised by the local Motorcycling Club and the cyclist were lead by Padraig Marrey and the 4 person RAAM squad of Colm Laverty, Adrian Mc Dermott, Steve Mc Manamon and Alan Duffy.
The venture was set up to raise funds for the Ciaran Maree Cancer Research and Development Fund, in memory of the young Gibbstown
man who passed away a year ago.
Last year the family raised nearly €250, 000 for Cancer Research and Development Fund for the Mater
Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin, this year they are hoping to match or better it.
Maire Lukes hotel put up refreshments for the large contingent on their arrival and plenty of song and dance followed which helped to ease out all the sore limbs.
