Marrey fails in 24hr record bid
305 miles and 16hrs 20mins into the 24hr race was as far as Padraig Marrey got when he tried to break the Irish record of 456miles set by Dave Mc Laughlin.
Marrey puts the failed attempt down to a number of reasons by mainly it was due to an old shoulder injury from the 2007 FBD Ras which prevented him from riding on the TT bars and eventually stopping. Even changing to a road bike he could barely hold the handlebars. All the way to that point Marrey looked good re breaking the record as he was averaging a faster pace than required where he was hoping to end up with a total of around 470 miles.
His back up team of Jim Tuohy, Simon O Dea and Graham Casey could do little as they watched on.
Marrey however looked on the positive side by saying “that he knows that with more specific training and better planning and pacing strategies that he can break the 24hr Irish record, he also said the very warm conditions which greeted the riders on Saturday afternoon and again on the Sunday probably didn’t help matters but it was the same for everyone”.
