Lots of gas and energy in Erris this weekend
A different type of gas and energy is set to flow in Erris this coming weekend as over 250 outdoor sports enthusiasts head for the north Mayo peninsula with bikes, runners and wetsuits in tow for the 2009 Erris Beo Blacksod Triathlon. Organised by the Kilmore Triathlon club, this spectacular event has being described as one of the most challenging sporting events in the country.
“The interest in this year’s event has been phenomenal. We have competitors coming from all over Ireland, the UK, New Zealand, Germany, Northern Ireland and the USA. The Erris Beo Blacksod Triathlon is now the biggest multi sporting event in the region and we’re delighted that so many people will be spending the weekend in north Mayo,” stated race director and secretary of the Kilmore Triathlon Club Jason Ó Mongáin.
This magical but gruelling event which showcases some of the most stunning scenery in Ireland involves a one mile endurance swim in Blacksod bay, a forty one kilometre cycle to Tarmon Hill, the highest point on the Erris peninsula and an amazing six mile run across the dunes of Falmore.
The inaugural Erris Beo Blacksod Triathlon in 2008 was won by Mark Dowling, who completed the three disciplines in two hours, one minute and thirty nine seconds while the fastest female was Sinead Jennings with a time of two hours, nineteen minutes and six seconds.
“I want to thank all our supporters and sponsors for making this event possible, there encouragement and commitment to promoting Erris as a quality leisure destination is greatly appreciated. This event will be a massive boost to the local economy over the weekend and we’re delighted that there will be a spin-off for the area. We have plans to make this event even bigger and better in the future,” stated Ó Mongáin.
The Blacksod Triathlon takes place on Saturday September 19th and anyone interested in the event can contact the Kilmore Trialthon Club at www.kilmoretriathlonclub.com or kilmoretri@gmail.com.
