Fitness Testing for 2009
With the start of the season only a few short weeks away, how do you know you are ready or fit enough to be competitive?
We offer fitness testing for all athletic abilities, we specialize in testing for cycling.
We can also individually test cyclists to see where their talents are best suited, be that for road racing, Track, Tri-athlon, or mountain biking.
The test unit and protocols hail from Australia using the BT testing unit, along with polar heart monitoring.
We can carry out testing at a venue of your choice or at my Base in Mayo.
The information given is more specific than that given at testing centre around the country.
Information identified from the Tests we carry out are:
•Aerobic Power
•Explosive Power
•Max Power
•Lactate Power
•Aerobic strength
•Max Heart Rate
•Heart Rate Zones
•Body Fats
•Weight and height.
Body Composition Analysis …
Fitness assessment as above plus assessment of body composition (ie body fat, lean muscle mass) Can be used as part of a training and weight management programme or as a bolt-on to a training programme.
BT Tests Descriptions
10 second explosive
The aim of the test is to identify your max explosive power.
Its an all out effort from seated standing start position, measuring your maximum explosive power (watts)
Doing the test in small gear (39x15) can highlight your speed ability as the RPM is usually very high.
Doing the test in a big Gear (53x15), can highlight your explosive strength ability.
1minute Lactate Test
The aim of the test is to identify your max lactate power.
its an all out effort over 60 seconds usually done in a Med to small gear (39x17)
Hit peak power and try to hold for 1 min, record average power and Max power over the 60secs.
VO2 max Test
The aim of this test is to identify your max aerobic power, the aim is to hold as high an average power as possible and try to hold same it over the 4mins.
Results give you average power and Heart rate.
Good test to establish your VO2 max power.
Aerobic Max test
This is the most important test for endurance cyclist or Tri-athletes as a number of fitness parameters can be established.
This is a long test that increases by 25watts every minute, till exhaustion.
The cyclists starts at double their weight in watts i.e. (if you weigh 80kgs then you start at 160watts) and the cyclist increases the load by 25w every minute till they can no longer hold the wattage.
This test determines their max aerobic wattage and it usually establishes their max heart rate.
Training Heart rate zones are also attained from this test.
Re Testing
Remember results from a test are only useful when you get a re-test done after a period of time training otherwise there is no way of identifying a fitness gain.
It is best to Re-test every 2-3months so that gains can be measured.
This allows a coach to best adapt training to suit the athlete needs for that time of year or for Goals approaching.
Testing on a yearly basis establishes bench marks from which an athlete can gauge their fitness from one year to the next.
Training programs
A detailed training plan can be drawn up on completion of tests, and once goals have been established, targets and future training can be put in place.
